Dowry torture slur on BJD leader, son

The Rourkela Mahila police on Thursday arrested a person, his mother, who is a local BJD leader, and his aunt, residents of Chhend colony here, on charges of dowry torture. Police forwarded them to court the same day.

Police source said that one Prakash Rath had fallen in love with one Nirmala Pal of Jhirpani and had married her in June 2012 against the wishes of his family. As Prakash is a Brahmin and Nirmala is of lower caste, the couple was not allowed in Rath’s family. As a result, they were staying separately in Udit Nagar and latter shifted to Bhubaneswar.

On July 25 this year, Nirmala gave birth to a baby girl and since then she has been staying at her parents’ house at Jhirpani. Instead of making arrangements to take the mother and child to his parental house, Prakash, his mother laxmipriya Rath and aunt Kuni Rath allegedly started demanding more dowry and started threatening her.

Hence, having no other way, Nirmala lodged an FIR at the Mahila police station, acting on which after preliminary investigation police arrested the accused, the police said.
