Don't sensationalise news on kids: Media urged

The Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (OSCPCR) on Wednesday conducted a sensitisation programme for journalists on issues relating to children and urged them not to sensationalise such issues.

“Wrong reporting of cases is more detrimental to children. The media should not only highlight issues relating to children but also suggest solutions rather than sensationalising the issues,” said National law University VC Prof (Dr) Srikrishna Deva Rao, who attended the event as the chief guest.

He said the role of the reporters and sub-editors is to verify the report to ensure that all the legal provisions are maintained for the sake of protection of child rights.

Rao highlighted various laws and guidelines pertaining to the child rights protection.

OSCPCR Chairperson Kasturi Mohapatra said children have the right to participation and be heard in matters concerning them. She said the law prohibits the identity of a child under the POSCO Act.

Stressing on an ethical framework in the media coverage of children’s issues and negative stereotypes, she highlighted Freedom of Press under Article 19(A) in the Constitution of India.

“Media is the watchdog of the society. Hence, it is important that the freedom of the Press is maintained. However, the media should work objectively, with sensitivity and should be factual and exercise restraint whereever required, especially on issues of children,” she added.
