'Don't privatise Ravenshaw University'

Published on:

The Ravenshaw Chhatra Kriyanusthan Committee on Saturday announced to gherao the Ravenshaw University Vice-Chancellor’s office on May 8 to press for fulfilment of its various demands.

The demands included withdrawal of the notice seeking all inmates to quit hostels by May 28, withdrawal of increased fees, making self-financing courses as regular ones, filling up all vacant lecturer posts and resumption of special examinations for failing final year students.

The committee resented that the university authorities have increased fees for existing courses from Rs 5,000 to 17,000 and created new courses with annual fees ranging from Rs 30,000 to 50,000. Besides, the authorities have also increased number of seats of regular courses and are collecting fees between Rs 30,000 and 40,000 annually.

Besides, the university authorities have planned to increase establishment and readmission fees, they alleged.

“This shows that the university authorities are trying to privatise the historical institute. Apprehending protests, they have asked students to vacate hostels by May 28. We will never make this conspiracy successful,” said committee members at a Press conference.

Among others, student leaders including Saroj Manshing, Ashok Tandi, Rajesh Das, Paresh Mulia, Chinmay Das, Arati Meher, Somnath Mallick, Sawan Sahu, Sameer Kumar Guin, Rana Pratap Dash, Hemanta Dash and Prashant Kumar Sahoo were present.
