The Indian Institute of Education and Care (IIEC) in association with the Indo Global Social Service Society (IGSSS) organised a ‘Meet the Press’ event on ‘Domestic Workers’ Demands and Rights’ with an objective to sensitise about the demands and rights of domestic workers here recently.
On the occasion, representatives of different workers’ associations demanded to form permanent welfare board, crèche facility at work place, maternity leave, social security cover including medical and health insurance, dignity at workplace, workplace security, minimum wages and contract from employer.
They alleged that even if the demands are presented to both the Central and State Governments at different times but nothing concrete has happened till now. Even the Draft Policy 2017 regarding domestic workers’ issues has not been implemented.
Workers also demanded governments to keep the entitlement of domestic workers at par with other informal sector workers along with all mandatory rights and privileges.
They also urged to establish a ‘State Domestic Workers’ Welfare Board’ to address different issues from time to time.
Project head Sarmila Patnaik, IIEC director Dr Shisir Kumar Das also spoke on the occasion.
