A gigantic dolphin was found dead in river Budhabalanga at Sahupada in Baleswar district on Thursday.
The dolphin, aged about 10 years, measured around 1.9 metre in length with a 40-cm-long snout and weighed 31 kg.
Divisional Forest Officer HB Udgata along with other wildlife officers fished out the body and sent it to the local veterinary surgeon (VS) for postmortem.
The autopsy report revealed that the dolphin’s lower jaw had been broken after its mouth got entangled with fishing net. For this, it couldn’t eat anything for days and ultimately died due to starvation. The body was buried in a secluded place, said Udgata.
