Member of National Commissioner for Women (NCW) Hemlata Kheria, accompanied by associate Manasi Pradhan, on Thursday visited Kharanashi village under the Mahakalpada police limits to conduct an inquiry into the rape and murder case of Sujata Bairagi.
Kheria went to arrested Ekadashi Das’ house, where the minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by fellow village youths and later set on fire. She also visited the girl’s house, talked to her parents and recorded their statement.
Sujata’s mother Renuka Bairagi complained about the lack of treatment of her daughter at the SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack. When the girl’s condition deteriorated further, the doctors did not provide proper treatment and finally recommended her treatment in a Delhi hospital. While Sujata was on her way to the Bhubaneswar airport, she died. The concerned doctor administered five to six injections on her dead body, Renuka alleged further.
The NCW member also visited the Mahakalpada police station and quizzed the police about the steps taken in the case.
Kheria said, “We will also visit the SCB Medical College Hospital and the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar in course of our inquiry. As per the preliminary inquiry, it has been found that doctors neglected Sujata’s treatment.”
