Tension prevailed in the Rajnagar Community Health Centre on Wednesday as locals assaulted a medico of the health centre alleging that a newborn baby died due to his negligence. The police have arrested two persons in this connection. Some supporters of the Zone-31 Zilla Parishad member allegedly assaulted the doctor and ransacked his house, said Rajnagar PS IIC Biranchi Bag
According to Bag, one Bhanumati Mistry of Rajrajeswarpur village gave birth to a premature baby in a 108 Ambulance on her way to the CHC. The mother and the baby got admitted in the hospital for treatment.
The condition of the baby worsened in the course of treatment. Seeing this, Dr Bhaktidipa Patnaik referred the infant to District Headquarters Hospital. But the child died before being shifted.
Angry of the newborn’s death, Bhanumati’s uncle Ramesh Mistry, ZP member Arun Kumar Rout, a Congress leader, and their supporters reportedly went to the Doctor’s official residence and assaulted him accusing him of neglecting care.
Dr Patnaik lodged an FIR Rout and his supporters with the police. The police nabbed the ZP member and detained him. On the other hand, Bhanumati’s uncle Ramesh also lodged a counter FIR against the Doctor alleging negligence. The police have registered cases on the basis of the complaints.
But on Thursday the Congress activists staged a road blockade at the Hansua river bridge on Rajnagar-Cuttack road demanding Rout’s release and action against the ‘errant’ doctor.
On being informed about the road blockade, Pattamundai SDPO Ram Chandra Gauda along with Bag rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators. But the agitators did not pay any heed to their demands.
They only withdrew their agitation when the District Collector assured them that an administrative inquiry will be conducted, said Sub-Collector Pratap Kumar Mishra.
Meanwhile, the police arrested and court forwarded Ranjan Rout, an supporter of the ZP member, and Ramesh on the charge of assaulting the doctor. The two have been remanded into jail custody, Bag informed. In yet another development ZP member Rout who was in polie detention, managed to flee from the spot by giving a slip to the police. Police have registered a case against Rout
When contacted, Kendrapada SP Rabi Narayan Behera informed that a departmental action will soon be initiated against ASI Yudhistir Sahu who was guarding Rout.
