A 12-member team under the banner of Bileimunda Grambasi and Anchalbasi in Sundargarh met district Collector on Monday for eviction of a country liquor shop.

Notably, the locals are holding an agitation for last 39 days braving the heat wave but their demand has not been fulfilled yet. They also held a relay hunger strike.

The protesters claimed that they will not withdraw their stir till the demand was not met and were planning to meet the State Excise Minister.

On Sunday, a large number of women staged a rally on the Mother’s Day and took oath to drive out liquor from the village.

The liquor shop in question is located at Bileimunda under Hemgiri block. The villagers of Garjanjor panchayat are holding the agitation for the shifting of the shop alleging that the shop has been the root cause of many disturbances in their locality.

During the relay hunger strike, Hemgiri Tehsildar lalat Kumar luha and Hemgiri police officials had discussed with the protesters to withdraw the strike but in vain. As a result, several of the agitators had been hospitalised.

The villagers had also discarded a Gram Sabha in protest against the apathy of the administration.

“We met the Collector on the issue but he refused to fulfill our demand for eviction of the liquor shop. We requested him to forward our demand to the Government,” said Rajendra Naik, a demonstrator.
