A physically-challenged man on Monday consumed poison in front of the district Collector and the SP before the Digapahandi block office in Ganjam district.
The victim was identified as Balakrushna Dora.
He was immediately rescued and rushed to a local hospital. Later, he was referred to the MKCG Medical College Hospital in Brahmapur after his condition deteriorated
The incident occurred when the Collector and SP were conducting a grievance hearing in the block office.
According to sources, Dora lives with his brother and father. However, his brother is mentally-challenged while his father has grown weak due to old-age. With no other member in his family, Dora had been running from pillar to post for the demarcation of farmland.
However, the officials concerned turned deaf ears to his pleas. Reports said, the officials were demanding bribes from him for the demarcation. He had approached the tehsil office and gone to meet the Collector a couple of times, but in vain
Losing all hope, he took the extreme step, some locals said.
