DIG recommends strong action against Jailor’

After making an on-the-spot inquiry of the jailbreak incident on Saturday at the R Udayagiri Sub-Jail in Gajapati district, from where two under-trial prisoners fled away, Jail DIG Raghunath Majhi on Sunday stated that he has recommended strong action against the Jailor for such serious lapse.

Describing the incident as a criminal conspiracy, Majhi said that one of the culprits, Sharat Kumar Dey, belonging to the Brahamgiri area in Puri district has been nabbed by a joint operation of R Udayagiri police and Jail staff and a hunt is on to arrest the other prisoner Karuan Gamango of the Adaba area in Gajapati district.

Both Dey and Gamango had been lodged in Paralakhemundi Jail in August last year in connection with ganja smuggling case, but because of the social distancing norms necessitated for the corona pandemic, they were shifted to the R Udayagiri Jail recently.  DIG Majhi suspected involvement of both outside people and jail staffs in the incident.
