Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday said nearly 5,000 units, including 500 in Odisha, for extracting compressed biogas (CBG) from agricultural residue, cattle dung and solid wastes of urban areas would be set up by 2023 across the country.

To develop interest among the stakeholders to establish CBG production units, Pradhan held a road show here on Sunday under the Union Government’s Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative. The SATAT road-show was organised by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

Pradhan said that the SATAT initiative aims to produce CBG from the agricultural residue and the policy would create huge employment opportunities and help the nation prosper.

He said 15 MMT compressed bio gas would be produced from 5,000 units in coming few days. A total of Rs 1.75 lakh crore would be invested on these projects, he said.

Pradhan informed that whopping 62 MMT CBG can be produced from wastes availed in the country. The CBG would cost Rs 46 per kg.

As many as 500 CBG units would be set up in Odisha and these units, when commissioned, would meet gas needs of transportation, industry and household sectors, he said.
