Five Councillors of the Bargarh Municipality on Tuesday tendered their resignations in protest against the district administration’s decision to change the venue of the world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Yatra.
Out of the Councillors who resigned, four are from the ruling BJD and one is from the Congress.
These Councillors are opposed to the shifting of the venue from Hatapada to the Nishamani grounds.
They are Ajit Seth, Manoj Pradhan2, Sashi Agarwal, Bedamati Pradhan and Basudev Bagarti.
The Councillors cited in their resignation letters that unnecessary highhandedness of the Collector would affect the glory of the Dhanu Yatra and hurt the feelings of the public at large.
They tendered their resignations to the Bargarh Municipality’s Executive Officer and the district Collector.
Besides, six members of the Dhanu Yatra Organising Committee have also tendered their resignations from the committee over the decision.
Notably, the Dhanu Yatra was being held at Hatapada for over several years. The district administration took the decision to shift the venue to the Nishamani grounds in view of the huge crowds and other reasons.
It may be mentioned that the district administration recently announced dates for the coming Dhanu Yatra, which would be held from January 2 to 12.
