DGP wants proper disposal of unidentified bodies

Taking seriously the recent Soro incidence on which a dead body was crumpled and pressed for accommodation in a gunny bag, DGP KB Singh on Monday asked all the SPs and DCPs and Railways SPs to instruct field police functionaries for decent handling and burial of unidentified dead bodies.

The field functionaries should be sensitised adequately in this regard, said the DGP.

Singh also instructed the SPs to utilise the Imprest Money available with them for proper carriage, handling, postmortem and disposal of unidentified dead bodies. The spending would be recouped from appropriate head later, he said.

Disposal of dead bodies, though not a direct responsibility of the local police, yet the police should see that such bodies must be properly disposed off by the local municipal body or local Government or non-Government organisations under the schemes like Mahaprayana or Harischandra, directed the DGP.

In another development, the DGP has suspended former Narasinghapur police station IIC Harmohan Nayak, who has been sent to jail custody on the charge of taking bribe Rs 5,000 from one Sushant Kumar Samal to resolve his land dispute.

Nayak had been caught red-handed by a team of Vigilane sleuths while taking bribe and sent to jail on August 18.

Nayak would stay under disciplinary control of the Cuttack district SP during his suspension period.
