Tension mounted on Thursday at Sahada village under Chandipur police station after a 36-year-old man hacked his wife to death late on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Sumitra Kamila (28) and accused, her husband Ajay Kamila.
After fellow villagers could learn that alcoholic Ajay murdered his spouse in an inebriated state when the latter didn’t oblige to his demand for money for taking liquor, they thrashed him severely.
Ajay was seriously injured and he was rescued by the police on Thursday morning from the clutches of an agitating mob and admitted in the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH).
“The accused is undergoing treatment in the DHH. He is being guarded and would be taken into custody after discharged from the hospital,” Sadar SDPO Pravash Chandra Pal said, adding, “A case has been registered under section of murder. The body has been sent for autopsy.
The accused in an inebriated state killed his wife with a sharp weapon, which is yet to be seized following altercation with her.”
According to the neighbours , Ajay, a wage earner, frequently used to fight with his wife in drunken state as he was looking after his family , wife and three daughters. Sumitra used to contribute family income by running a makeshift eatery.
