Defunct drains, waterlogged roads

Published on:

Over flowing drains and stagnant sewage rooms have been a constant source of problems for the residents of several wards of BeMC, more particularly the low-lying areas of the city, said former Ganjam district president Kanhu Charan Pati here.

The local residents in several wards often complain that, even in normal rain, the sewage/drain water remained stagnant on the road for months. Pati alleged due to lack of proper drainage, the residents were facing difficulties. The situation of drainage system in the city is in such a state of doldrums that even a brief spell of rain leaves these areas waterlogged and  creates artificial flood in many residential areas to which the Drainage Division authorities and district administration have paid deaf ears, he alleged.

Pati alleged further that, the Drainage Division has totally gone defunct. He asked where was the money the Drainage Division received was spent. Because of poor workmanship and low quality of work of both Bahana Nala and Sapua Nala on the outskirts, the walls have collapsed several times and become defunct for which proper draining of stagnated rain water becomes difficult. Even a number of drains of different blocks that come under the Brahmapur Drainage Division are in a shambles, Pati alleged.

The BJP demanded an impartial probe by the SP vigilance into the spending of crores of rupees all these years. The party gave a 15 day ultimatum, failing which a delegation of the State BJP will meet the Governor demanding his intervention, Pati cautioned.
