The decomposed carcass of a tusker was discovered in the Kalagarh range of Corbett national park here on Thursday. One of the tusks of the elephant was discovered about 200 metres away from the carcass. After a post mortem, the carcass was buried. The Kalagarh sub divisional officer Ramakant Tiwari informed that the department’s team was on patrol when they smelled the stench of an elephant carcass. The department then got a special patrol conducted after which they came across an elephant carcass about 10 days old lying at a spot about five kilometres from the common path. The SDO informed that the site where the carcass of the tusker was discovered is at a steep gradient of a hill.
It is being surmised that the tusker possibly died as a result of a fight with another elephant or that it fell off the hill side and died as a result. The age of the dead tusker was estimated to be about 40 years.
