Debt-ridden Baleswar farmer ends life

A farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Padmapur village under the Chandipur police station in the district on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Sumanta Behera of Padampr village.

Family members of the deceased said that Sumanta had taken loans from private moneylenders for cultivation in his five acres of land. But the paddy crops were damaged due to deficit rainfall.

In the morning, Sumanta had an argument with his son over repayment of the loans. Depressed over crop loss and loan burden, he ended his life by consuming pesticide. Though Sumanta was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital, he succumbed to the effects of poison.
