DCC chiefs' meeting with Rahul deferred, likely today

The much-hyped meeting of 23 District Congress Committee (DCC) presidents with AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi, scheduled in New Delhi on Wednesday was postponed due to the latter’s preoccupation, said party State deputy in-charge Subhankar Sarkar.

The meeting is now rescheduled for 10 am on Thursday, added Sarkar.

Sources said Rahul did not meet the leaders as the Delhi police arrested him while he was protesting against the suicide of a former solider over the OROP row on Wednesday afternoon.

Of the total 32 DCC chiefs, 23 have left for New Delhi after reportedly being summoned by the AICC to meet Rahul Gandhi amid the demand of ouster of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Prasad Harichandan.

Sources said some PCC general secretaries and secretaries along with vice-president Ranjib Biswal are also camping in the national capital after being called by the party high command.

According to party sources, forthcoming panchayat elections and organisational matters are likely to figure at the meeting with Gandhi.

However, it is widely discussed in political circles that the high command has summoned the DCC chiefs to gauge the support behind Harichandan as the PCC president. The district presidents have been asked by Gandhi to meet him in two phases.

However, 10 district presidents belonging to the districts represented by 16 party MlAs have not gone to Delhi. last month, the 16 MlAs led by leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra had met Rahul Gandhi demanding change of guard in the PCC which the former strongly opposed.
