A day after his newly-married wife’s death, a heartbroken Akrura Swain attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison at Parvatipur village under the Fatehpur police station in Nayagarh district on Saturday. He was admitted to a hospital in critical condition.
Akrura had married Kaushalya three months ago. On Friday, Kaushalya was found dead in the house and it was alleged that she was killed by her in-laws over dowry demand.
According to a complaint lodged by Kaushalya’s uncle Prafulla Nayak of Mardarajpur, while her family had given cash of Rs 20,000 and assets worth around Rs 1 lakh, her in-laws had been demanding more Rs 50,000 in cash as dowry. As she failed to bring the dowry money, her in-laws killed her.
After Akrura consumed poison on Saturday morning, he was first rushed to the Bhapur hospital and later shifted to a Bhubaneswar medical.
Meanwhile, police along with a scientific team reached the spot and began an investigation into the incident.
