Dalits gherao Konark police for inaction

Published on:

Tension prevailed at the Konark police station here on Tuesday morning as hundreds of Dalit people of Beruhan village (ward 13) under the Konark Notified Area Council (NAC) gheraoed it, protesting the apathetic attitude of the police administration.

According to the villagers, their neighbouring Nagamatha villagers on many occasions uprooted the electric polls and snapped the wires intentionally to prevent supply of electricity to their village owing to rivalry. As a result, most often, the Beruhan villagers have to live without power. When the CESCO men come for restoring the supply, they are obstructed by the Nagamatha villagers.

“Though we have approached the Konark police for justice, nothing tangible has happened yet. The police are yet to take any step on our complaint. So we have been forced to gherao the police station,” said the aggrieved villagers.

However, following the intervention of Nimapada SDPO Abhimanyu Das, the protestors called off the agitation.
