Dalits decry police inaction in atrocity cases

Accusing the State Government of not taking any concrete measures to check the increasing atrocities on Dalits across the State, the National Confederation of Dalit Organisations (NACDOR) on Friday decried the inaction of the Kendrapada police in giving justice to dalits and demanded immediate intervention of the Chief Minister.

“Atrocities on dalit people are on the rise in the State. While a minor girl in Patkura is running from pillar to post for justice since last few days after being raped by miscreants, another minor girl in Pikrali village under the Mahakalapada police station is crying for justice from police since last two months as she was beaten up by villagers because she touched a village tube-well,” rued NACDOR State president Ashok Kumar Mallick while staging a demonstration here in front of Assembly along with supporters.

In a fresh case of police inaction, Malllick said when a dalit school girl in Chakadagagua village under the Mahakalpada police station on September 9 on the occasion of Ganesh Puja had tried to break a coconut near the deity in the school she was thrown out of the school. But the police are yet to initiate any step to act on her complaint.

“In all these cases, the Kendrapada police action is not satisfactory. The Kendrapada district Superintendent of Police himself threatened the victims’ families to withdraw complaints,” alleged Mallick.

The protestors demanded immediate arrest of the culprits, speedy police action on dalit atrocity cases pending in various police stations and stringent action against the Kendrapada SP as per the Scheduled Caste and Tribe (Atrocity Prevention) Act-1973, failing which they would resort to a State-wide agitation.
