Dalit woman gangraped in Kendrapada

A case has come to the fore in Kendrapada district where a Dalit woman, mother of four children, was allegedly gangraped in Ghodadanda under Patkura police station on Tuesday night.

Kendrapada SDPO Nrushingha Charan Swain said Aspuspa Jena (name changed) was raped by three persons near a bush behind an abandoned school at Ghodadanda after assaulting her husband.

Aspuspa, a resident of Panasuapada under the Patkura police station, had married a resident of Kaipada in Jajpur district more than a decade back. Both spouses worked as daily wagers in the Panasuapada area staying in a thatched house on the roadside at Ghodadanda for last six months.

Some locals led by one Abhiram Das alias Hagura, on March 17 demolished the thatched house, following which the family was taking shelter at the abandoned.

On Tuesday night when Aspuspa, her husband and children were taking rest in a room of the abandoned school, five miscreants came there claiming as police personnel, assaulted her husband and took him away by a motorbike to Karilopatana by terrorising him. later, three miscreants allegedly raped Aspupsa one after another after taking her to the bush and left the place leaving her alone.

“When I reached the school, I found my husband there. I informed him about my plight. Among the miscreants, I managed to identify Abhiram Das of Jalapak,” said Aspuspa. She filed an FIR on Wednesday night against Abhiram and his four associates. The police registered a case.

On Thursday, the Patkura police managed to detain a couple of persons for their involvement in the gangrape case. Meanwhile, a haunt is on to nab the prime accused Abhiram and his other associates, said SDPO Swain.

On the other hand, some locals on Thursday went to the Patkura police station, met the SDPO and alleged that the gangrape case is fake and fabricated. It has been scripted by Aspuspa and her family with the help of some political people to harass the locals by taking advantage of the fact they were Dalits. The locals brought to the notice of the police that the woman and her mother are habitual petitioners .They demanded a high-level inquiry into the present gangrape case. If innocent people are arrested in this case, they would resort to agitation, they warned.

later on Thursday, the villagers of Gopei on Thursday evening gheraoed SDPO Swain and IIC of Patkura PS Kartik Mallick for more than an hour demanding release of their fellow villager Kantha Jena, who was detained in the gangrape case at the police station.
