A Dalit allegedly faced the wrath of a police officer and later in serious condition had to be hospitalized in Kendrapada district.

According to sources, Dalit Sumanta Jena (38), a resident of Naiadiha village, went to Choudakulat police out post to face an inquiry in a case on Sunday after he was asked to report there. However, Choudakulat police outpost in-charge Basant Satapathy got berserk during interrogation and started misbehaving him with slang language and assaulted him.

As a result, Jena fainted. Satpathy asked his family members to take Jena from the outpost and admit him in a hospital. The victim was first rushed to the Pattamundai CHC for treatment and later was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital and the SCB Medial College Hospital, Cuttack.

According to Rashmita Jena, the victim’s wife, Jena had been asked to report at the police outpost over a quarrel with their neighbour.

However, as the in-charge police officer had been bribed, he wanted to force Jena to admit guilt which the latter did not oblige. Consequently, he took Jena to a room and beat him black and blue. This resulted in Jena losing sense.

Rasmita sought relief from Kendrapada SP in the case.

“I want justice from SP of Kendrapara and action against the police official who beat my husband. As my husband is a heart patient, he could not withstand the torture meted out to him at the police outpost,” said Rashmita. Kendrapada SP Nitinjeet Singh said he would direct a probe on the alleged matter of police excess and take action accordingly.
