Baleswar town, a maritime and growing city, lacks a proper daily market as remodeling of the markets have not been done due to lackadaisical approach of the authorities.
Baleswar town while has two major daily markets one at Motiganj (Ghosh market) and another at Naya bazaar, both of them under Baleswar municipality lack adequate space. While on the one hand they are over congested and on the other, they are not properly cleaned and left unhygienic.
Besides, there are hardly any parking spaces for these markets. Even during the Corona period maintaining social distancing in the market is hardly possible.
As these markets don’t have adequate garbage disposal mechanisms one can witness heaps of stinking waste materials near markets.
Although a proposal was made during previous MP tenure to shift the Nayabazar market and construct a multi storyed market complex in the existing place with Rs 25 crore yet after 4 years no tangible progress is seen.
Besides renovation of daily market at Naya bazaar there were proposals to create more vending zones in the town and streamline the street vendors.
One constructed vending zone by the municipality close to the boundary of DRDO family quarters couldn’t be operational following objection by the latter and the opening is stayed by the High court.
The residents of Baleswar town are expecting modernisation of the daily markets and construction of more vending zones to accommodate the street vendors.
“This market and vending zone issue would be resolved in due course after having consultations with the Urban Development Department, municipal authorities and concerned departments,” said Sadar MLA Swarup Das.
