The Mancheswar police here on Friday night foiled a dacoity bid by nabbing five youths while they were planning to rob a sand quarry near the Kuakhai river.
The accused were identified as Samir Jena (26) alias Nanda, Ranjit Pradhan (30) alias Ranji from Ganjam district, Laxmidhar Naik (26) alias Bitu and Biju Palai (20) from Khordha district and Rajesh Behera (20) alias Sapa from Nayagarh district.
On a tipoff, the police swung into action and conducted raid in a secluded area near the Biju Patnaik Club and Gym Centre in Mancheswar and apprehended the accused.
The cops seized a country-made 7.6 mm pistol, three live ammunitions with magazine, one knife, one chopper, one billhook, two motorcycles, a mobile phone and two packets of chili powder from their possession.
“Several cases are pending against the gang members at different police stations in Bhubaneswar,” police said.
