: The Tuesday night’s blast toll in a cracker manufacturing unit in Cuttack Sadar went up to two on Wednesday when a 70-year-old woman sustaining over 90 per cent burn injuries succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital here.
The woman’s granddaughter Subhashree Sahu (17) had been received dead in the hospital late on Tuesday night soon after crackers went off in Subash Sahu’s unit located at village Sainso under the Cuttack Sadar police station.
Police said another member of the family; also a teen-aged girl, is currently undergoing treatment in the burn unit of the hospital in a critical condition. “She has received over 70 per cent burn injuries,” said local ACP Nimai Charan Sethi.
Reports said the cracker unit run by Subash at his village was an old and reputed one. “Although the cause of the mishap is not known yet, we are going to verify the unit’s licence and examine what safety measures were in place,” Sethi said.
