Cuttack Baliyatra enters Guinness Book

The famous Cuttack Baliyatra on Tuesday etched its name in the Guinness Book of World Records at an event organised by the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) at the fair.

More than 2,100 school students of 22 schools made over 22,000 paper boats in 35 minutes, creating the world record.

Cuttack district Collector Bhabani Shankar Chayani, Cuttack Mayor Subash Singh and around 50 officials of the Guinness Book of World Records, including one from London, were present on the occasion.

The students had earlier been trained to make the paper boats for the world record attempt.

The aim of the move by the CMC was global recognition of the annual open trade fair on the Mahanadi bank in the city.

The size and weight of the paper boats were prescribed by the authorities of Guinness Book of World Records.

The CMC had contacted the headquarters of the Guinness Book of World Records in London and received in reply a list of protocols for organising the event to attempt the record.

Meanwhile, this year’s Baliyatra in Cuttack has been extended by a day, informed Collector Chayani on Tuesday. The fair will now conclude on November 17 (Thursday).

“We had urged the State Government to extend the Baliyatra by two days. In view of the interest of the traders, the Government has permitted to extend the fair by a day,” the Collector said.
