Crucial HC lawyers' meeting on Monday

The Odisha High Court Bar Association will hold a crucial general body meeting on Monday morning to decide the fate of its ongoing month-long strike. This was informed by association vice-president Milan Kumar Badu on Saturday.

The Cuttack lawyers are boycotting the court since September 26 after the State Government decided to recommend to the Union law Minister regarding setting up of permanent HC Benches elsewhere.

Meanwhile, a five-member delegation of HC lawyers led by senior advocate NC Panigrahi met the State Chief Justice on Thursday and submitted an additional memorandum to him in connection with their objection to the State Government’s proposal to belittle the principal seat of the High Court.

“The Honourable Chief Justice has assured the delegation that the decision of the Full Court over the issue would be communicated to the Odisha High Court Bar Association,” Badu said.

It was learnt that the Full Court was held twice during this week and the issue of HC Bench was top on the agenda. Similarly, the Chief Justice has already heard the views of several bars in the State over the issue after the Union law minister Kapil Sibal sent the recommendation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the former’s stand on the matter.

It may be mentioned here that after the Chief Minister’s “unilateral” recommendation to the Union aw minister, the lawyers of Orissa High Court are boycotting court activities for over a month now.

“The general body meeting of the bar association will be held again on Monday morning where discussions would be held regarding the further course of action,” Badu said on Saturday.
