South-East Circle Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Sudarshan Nayak on Monday recorded the statements of 18 persons, including six injured passengers, who were travelling in the ill-fated passenger train that rammed into a goods train near here on Thursday last.

Two passengers had died and many were injured in the mishap in which the train apparently jumping the track signal hit the rear of a stationary goods train near the Kathajodi passengers halt here. Following Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu’s direction, the CRS is investigating to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Speaking to reporters, Nayak said he would submit a preliminary report of his investigation within a month and try to submit the final report soon after that. Among the 25 issued notices to depose before the CRS on the day, only 12 turned up to record their statements.

The CRS also recorded the statements of six passengers, who are currently undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital here.

The railway employees who failed to turn up will be issued fresh notices asking them to appear before the commissioner on another date.
