The Vigilance police on Sunday arrested and forwarded to court Jaleswar BDO Ashwini Kumar Das for possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 5 crore, which he could not account for satisfactorily.
The anti-graft agency had conducted raids at six places in Baleswar, Cuttack and Kendrapada districts on Saturday on the allegations of the BDO possessing assets disproportionate to his known source of income.
After thorough search, inventory and further inquiry, the income, expenditure and assets of Das were calculated and he was found in possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 5 crore, which is 450 per cent higher than his known sources of income.
The BDO’s assets included 24 plots in Cuttack and Kendrapada, two buildings worth over Rs 1 crore each, seven vehicles, Rs 74 lakh bank deposits, Rs 1.7 lakh cash, one kg gold and 3.5 kg silver.
Notably, the raids were conducted a day after Das was transferred and posted as Jatni Tehsildar. Following his arrest, the appointment was cancelled while Khordha BDO Rumana Jafri was posted as Jatni Tehsildar.
