Hundreds of farmers of Kerandi panchayat under Gosani block of Parlakhemundi in Gajapati district under the leadership of BJP leader Sunil Mahapatra on Monday staged a demonstration by blocking the road in front of the Collectorate here and submitted a memorandum demanding immediate compensation for crop damage.

The farmers alleged that although 24 days have passed off to the cyclone and flood but the Government had not provided any type of assistance. The Government has also not announced any special package for the farmers yet, they lamented.

Accusing the district administration of neglecting the farmers, Mahapatra said despite BJP’s repeated appeals for immediate compensation to the farmers, the latter got no benefit.

The farmers demanded complete loan waiver, cash compensation for those who have not taken crop loan, further sanction of loan to the farmers without interest, supply of free seeds, fertilisers and insecticides, house for the houseless and reconstruction of irrigation facility in the farm lands. The farmers warned of intensifying their agitation if the demands were not fulfilled soon.
