Notorious criminal Mithun Bhuyan was injured in a police encounter on the Bhanjanagar-Durgaprasad road near the Soradevi Temple in Ganjam district early on Saturday morning.

A bike, a pistol, a magazine, four live bullets and three mobile phones were seized from his possession, sources said. Mithun sustained bullet injuries on his legs in the encounter and was admitted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital here.

According to reports, police tried to intercept the criminal and his associate Bagu Nayak when they were going through the road. However, they opened fire at the cops and threw bombs in a bid to escape.

The police fired back in retaliation in which Mithun sustained injuries on his two legs and was then nabbed by the cops. Bagu, however, managed to flee the spot.

As many as eight dacoity cases have been pending against Mithun at different police stations. He was also involved in a case of loot from a jewellery shop in Buguda in the district on October 31 this year, said Ganjam SP Ashish Singh.
