Credibility is important for media, says Guv Jamir

The mushrooming of news channels sometimes affects the credibility and ethics of reporting. When there is cutthroat competition in the media, it is the credibility which is the ultimate winner and makes the difference, said Governor SC Jamir. He was speaking at the Kalinga TV Colloquium-2015, an initiative of the Kalinga Media and Entertainment, here on Sunday.

Credibility not only affects information about the news but also affects the viewers’ perception about the news channel. News channels should be aware of the factors and there should be continuous efforts to improve them. This would be beneficial to the news media as they are getting tough competition from the social media. It takes a lot to build credibility and very little to destroy it, said Jamir.

He congratulated Kalinga TV founder Achyuta Samanta for his efforts in launching the 24x7 news channel and urged the channel to produce the entire spectrum of Odisha’s development and potentials. Samanta delivered the welcome address. Among others, MP Prasanna Patsani, Ministers Damodar Rout and Pradeep Panigrahi and Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik also spoke and wished all their best to the Kalinga TV.

Earlier, panel discussions on various topics were held as parts of the colloquium. Inaugurating the event, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said media should be cooperative and friendly and free from corporate influence. The inaugural session was graced by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of the Republic of Zimbabwe Maxwell Ranga; State Minister Pradeep Kumar Amat; State Congress president Prasad Harichandan; Chief Secretary GC Pati; and Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, Business World Anurag Batra.
