The Academy of Yoga and Oriental Studies (AYOS) organised a lecture on “Cow: the Divine Mother” here on Sunday with AYOS director Dr Indulata Das being the speaker of the topic. Senior journalist Sugyan Choudhury presided over the meeting.

Dr Das said reverence to the cow is one of the pillars on which the culture of India stands. It is considered to be a proud privilege to sacrifice one’s own life for saving a cow. The mother cow is inseparably associated with Indian religious, spiritual, financial and social life.

“The divine mother’s contribution to our lives is beyond every description. In ancient India, protecting cow was the responsibility of the state. A special department was functioning for the protection of the cow. Many senior and junior employees were engaged in it with various responsibilities. Killing a cow was a heinous crime in ancient India. Capital punishment was awarded for killing a cow,” she added.

There was a question-answer session after the lecture which was enriched by views and questions from various scholars.

Sugyanr Choudhury said mother cow is the symbol of Indian culture. King Dilipa did not hesitate to sacrifice his valuable life for protecting a single cow. Chhatrapati Sivaji never went to the battlefield without worshipping the mother cow along with Goddess Bhavani.

Mihir Kumar Mishra thanked the audience and the guests.
