Punjilal Meher, who was arrested in connection with the Patnagarh wedding parcel bomb blast case by the Crime Branch, applied for bail in the Balangir Additional District and Sessions Court on Thursday.
The court completed its hearing on the bail plea and reserved its verdict. Punjilal’s lawyer, while speaking to the reporters, said, “We have presented our case properly and are hopeful that he will get bail. In case of rejection, he has the fundamental right to move the higher court for justice.”
Punjilal had planned and executed the parcel bomb crime singlehandedly which killed newly married techie Soumya Sekhar Sahu and his grandmother Jemamani on February 23. Soumya’s wife Reema was critically injured in the incident.
Punjilal was identified as the accused and arrested by the Crime Branch after marathon interrogation. He had planned the crime to take revenge on Soumya’s mother Sanjukta Sahu, who was promoted to the post of Principal of Jyoti Vikas Junior College in Bhainsa, where he was teaching English. After his arrest Punjilal is presently lodged in the Patnagarh Sub-Jail.
