Couple killed for 'practising sorcery'

In the second incident of its kind in Keonjhar district in the last fortnight, the hacked bodies of a tribal couple suspected to have been killed for practising witchcraft were found in the forested area near Kolahundula village of Deojhar gram panchayat under the Joda police limits in the district on Tuesday.

After finding the bodies of his parents in the forest, the couple’s son Roynath Munda lodged a complaint at the Joda police station saying his parents, who had gone to the forest to collect firewood on Sunday, were hacked with an axe.

In his complaint, Roynath has named five persons, alleging that they might have killed his parents Mangal Munda (60) and his wife Sukramani (55).

Police were tight-lipped about the identities of the five persons named by Munda, apprehending that disclosure of the names could prompt the accused to flee the area.

The police recovered the bodies and have started investigating into the case.
