A special squad of the Commissionerate Police and the Kolkata Crime Branch (CB) sleuths on Friday arrested a Bengali couple in lingaraj police station area on charges of duping nearly Rs200 crore from investors in various States, including West Bengal and Odisha, by opening a chit fund company, Sai Empowered Marketing.
“Allegations were leveled against Anchita Mahato and his wife Bebina alias Susmita Mahato that they duped people of Rs200 crore in chit fund business. Following the Kolakata police’s regular raids on the chit fund companies, they had fled to Odisha a few days ago. The Kolkata CB had sought our help to arrest the duo,” said DCP Nitinjeet Singh. The Kolkata CB will take the duo in transit remand after producing them in a local court. However, the couple refuted the allegation and claimed that they were innocent, sources said. Meanwhile, the Odisha CB brought the seized luxurious Mercedes-Benz car worth Rs50 lakh of Seashore CMD Prashant Dash from Mumbai. The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the CB had located the car in Mumbai on July 3 last, where Dash was arrested last month. Notably, the EOW of the CB had also seized a luxurious BMW car worth approximately Rs50 lakh from the possession of Dash.
