A couple was arrested on Thursday for conducting illegal sex determination tests at their ultrasound unit at Roxy Lane under the Badambadi police station in Cuttack city. They were identified as the unit’s owner Nijeet Mohapatra and his wife Mamina.
A special squad of the Health and Family Welfare Department had conducted raids at the unit on Wednesday. However, one of the associates of the couple managed to flee from the spot.
An official said the squad conducted simultaneous raids in the presence of Deputy Collector Alakarani Debata at three different places leading to the arrests and seizure of some medical equipment including two potable ultrasound machines which were being used for prenatal sex determination.
The places where raids were carried out also included a unit each in Arunodayanagar and Dolamundai. Police seized CCTV footage from the illegal centre. Nijeet’s son, a few doctors and some staffs of the centre are also involved in the illegal activity, the official said.
