In a tragic road accident, a middle-aged couple died on the spot while their 12-year-old son miraculously escaped with minor injuries when the car in which they were travelling hit a roadside tree after it collided head on with a truck near Choudwar on NH-55, on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday afternoon.
“The deceased were identified as Sibaprasad Das (45) and his wife Kabita (40) of Bhubaneswar, who were travelling to Dhenkanal,” informed local police inspector RR Mohapatra.
Their minor son Ayushman was immediately rushed to the SCB Medical College Hospital here, where his condition was stated to be stable.
The impact of the accident was so severe that the ill-fated car was completely mangled beyond recognition. Police said fire brigade personnel, policemen and a few onlookers had to struggle for over 15 minutes to remove the injured boy and his dead parents from the twisted vehicle.
The truck was impounded and its driver was taken into custody, police added.
