A girl and a youth, apparently in love, attempted to commit suicide at a hotel in Puri on Saturday, after which the girl died while the youth was hospitalised in a critical condition.
According to reports, the duo arrived at the hotel and asked for a room.
However, the hotel staffs denied them a room as they failed to produce necessary identity proofs.
Soon later, the two were found lying in an unconscious state on the veranda of the hotel after allegedly consuming pesticide.
Some friends of the youth rescued the duo and admitted them at the Puri District Headquarters Hospital, where the girl died while undergoing treatment.
The youth, identified as Ashish Pradhan of Chandanpur in Puri district, was later shifted to the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated.
Police started investigation into the incident.
The reason behind the extreme step being taken by the two can be ascertained after a detailed probe, police said.
