Cotton gauze left in during hydrocele surgery

A cotton gauze weighing 100 grams came out from the hydrocele testis of a patient, two and a half months after he had a surgery in September last at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) here.

The surgery specialist had left a gauze pad inside the testicle of the patient. The gauze pad appeared automatically in December.

Surendra Rout (50), a resident of Nagapur village under Kendrapara block, continued to feel pain despite having undergone the surgery. He kept complaining before doctor Manas Chandra Biswal who had operated him but the latter did not pay any heed.

Rout alleged that doctor Biswal had demanded Rs 3,000 from him before conducting the surgery on September 18 but he could only arrange Rs 2,500.  He was discharged by the surgery specialist on September 26.

“After returning from the hospital, the pain continued on my hydroceles . Though I later communicated surgery specialist, Manas Biswal several times in October, suspecting that something might have gone wrong during the surgery, but the doctor always sent me back after prescribing some medicines. When I failed to bear pain, my family members took me to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, in November .The doctor told me the pain was either due to infection or something wrong during operation. He prescribed me some medicines and advised me to come after a week. But on December 1, the gauze came out automatically with pus,” said Rout. He narrated, “later, I was admitted at the DHH again but the close associates of the surgery specialist allegedly threatened me not to disclose the matter to media.”

Meanwhile, Rout demanded before the CDMO and the Health Minister to take stern action against the errant doctor.

Doctor Biswal, however, rubbished the allegation as purely false. “If there was gauze in hydrocele, the patient would have died,” he stated. CDMO Binayak Prusty said that the matter was yet to come to his notice.
