Corporal punishment: OHRC notice to Angul DEO

Published on:

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has served a notice on Angul District Education Officer (DEO) in connection with harsh corporal punishment meted out to a school student May 10 this year.

According to a complaint filed by Angul-based Human Righst Watch secretary and rights activist Sangita Swain, a schoolteacher and Anganwadi worker had beaten up a student who was playing in the school premises near the school in Basala. Anganwadi assistant Damayanti Ghadei, however, had said an unidentified criminal committed the crime.

Taking cognisance of the complaint the OHRC sought an action-taken report from Angul DEO by October 30. Alleging that the act violates the rights of the victim, Swain had sought criminal proceedings against the school authorities and Rs5 lakh compensation to the victim.
