A lower court here on Monday allowed the Commissionerate Police to take the arrested businessman Bholanath Bhagat on a five-day police remand from Tuesday. Bhagat, a native of the city who was nabbed by the city police from a location in Uttar Pradesh last week in connection with his links with the arrested mafia Dhalsamant brothers, was produced before the Court of SDJM.
Claiming that Bhagat was also involved in the murder of Dipu Mallick and Om Prakash Swain, two former associates of the Dhalsamant brothers, police had sought a seven-day remand of him. But the court allowed five days of remand and sent Bhagat to the Choudwar jail on judicial remand for the day.
Notably, Bhagat’s house here at Badambadi was raided by the police soon after the arrest of Dhalsamant brothers Sushant and Sushil on January 29.
It was ascertained that Bhagat had rented his house at Pokhariput in Bhubaneswar to the Dhalsamants, from where the brothers were arrested on January 29. “We are confident of extracting more evidences about the twin murders of November 2013 from the accused during his custodial interrogation,” said city DCP Sanjiv Arora.
