To check crime by students

Expressing concern over the increasing number of students form colleges particularly engineering colleges in the capital city and elsewhere resorting to various crimes, the State Government has started measures to check the trend.

The Bhubaneswar –Cuttack Commissionerate Police are preparing a roadmap to launch a massive awareness campaign in the city colleges especially in engineering institutes after five engineering students were arrested on charges of possessing illegal arms on Friday. Police Commissioner RP Sharma said the campaign will kick off after summer vacation.

Similarly, taking the issue seriously, Science and Technology Department and Technical Education and Training Secretary S Kumar on Saturday said a report has been sought on the number of engineering students arrested in the crimes and the name of the institutions.

Kumar said that on receipt of the report, the Technical Education and Training Department would hold discussions with the managements of all the colleges relating to the existing hostel facilities, monitoring system in the hostels and other study infrastructure.

The Department would serve show cause notices against the institutions which lack proper facilities to discipline the students, he said.  The Government would also conduct audit in all the technical education institutions, he added.
