The Commissionerate police here on Tuesday seized over hundred tins of adulterated edible oils from a makeshift godown located in the Jagatpur area and arrested a person in this connection. The police also seized several empty tins, chemicals, stickers and logo of various branded companies dealing with edible oils from the godown, said city DCP Akhileswar Singh.
Singh said an unscrupulous trader, Anadi Behera, of Mangalabag of the city was doing business at Jagatpur. “Getting a tip, the Jagatpur police raided Behera’s godown and seized huge quantities of adulterated products of both mustard and refined oil packed in new tins with stickers and logos of branded companies on it,” Singh said, adding that Behera was arrested.
Fake and adulterated goods packaged having levels of branded companies on them are now marketed rampantly in the Cuttack market. Traders dealing with such items are targeting particularly small and retail shop owners of rural areas. The city police had recently also unearthed two adulterated packaging units dealing with fake edible oils from Khan Nagar and Ranihat of the city.
Units engaged in dealing with fake and adulterated food items and consumer products are operating on the outskirts of the city. These unscrupulous traders even deal with baby foods, milk powder, edible ghee, pickle, talcum powder and detergents. From their makeshift godowns, these fake products packed neatly having stickers of popular brand names are supplied to rural areas.
