Cops seek trial of jailed RTI activist

The city police on Thursday filed a charge-sheet in a lower court here seeking trial of jailed Puri-based RTI activist Jayant Das for allegedly depraving and maligning the reputation of Gajapati Maharaja of Puri and making a malicious attempt to outrage religious feelings of the Hindus.

The lalbag police, after investigation, submitted the final report before the SDJM Court charging Das under Sections 292, 295a and 504 of IPC and Section 67 of IT Act.

Notably, the activist is currently undergoing a jail term after being convicted in a cyber-porno case.

Claiming himself to be an activist, Das in 2016 had posted obscene remarks about Puri Gajapati Maharaja Divyasingha Deb in Facebook. Taking umbrage at the remarks, Jayasankar Acharya, an advocate of the city, had asked Das to delete the post from the social media.

However, instead of removing the distasteful post on the Gajapati, Das further made malicious remarks about the advocate and his father. He had also deliberately and with malicious intentions made derogatory remarks outraging the religious feelings of the Hindus.

Shocked over such acts of the RTI activist, Acharya had lodged an FIR against him at the lalbag police station. The police, after registering a case, made a remand prayer before a court here and took him on remand for interrogation in August.
