The town traffic police have launched a crackdown against driving of two-wheelers by teenagers without having driving licences and documents.
The enforcement squad besides verifying the documents of the vehicles, mainly driving licence and insurance papers also penalise the bikers for over-speeding on the town roads.
In the last three days, during surprise checking at various prominent junctions, the police caught 88 bikers for flouting various rules. In two cases, the driving licences were impounded for three months.
As many as 42 minor bikers were caught driving vehicles without licences and the bikes were seized and handed over to their parents after recovering penalty from them.
Of late, it is observed that the minor bikers are indulging in rash and helmetless driving without valid documents.
Recently, two college students on a speeding bike had hit a senior DRDO scientist near Police line square. The scientist is still undergoing treatment in a Bhubaneswar-based private hospital.
Traffic Police Officer-in-Charge Prasant Ransing said the present crackdown has been undertaken to curb accidents and sensitise the bikers about the traffic safety rules and regulations. Rash driving without helmets and conversing on mobile phones while driving are the main causes of accidents.
“Most of the accidents in the town are occurring due mainly to rash and wrong-side driving. It is seen school and college children with power bikes driving beyond speed limits without helmets. On one hand, they are without licences, and on the other, they break the traffic rules,” Ransingh said.
