Taking a serious view of the illegality on the part of the Nayapalli police by converting a gangrape and murder case to a suicidal one, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Commissioner of Police to submit an action-taken report in the matter within four weeks.
The direction came after Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain moved the commission alleging that on May 1, miscreants had gangraped Bijayalaxmi Prusty wife of Balunkeshwar Prusti of Neheru basti under Nayapalli police station following which she committed suicide.But the police converted the gangrape case to suicidal death despite several appeals of her husband for a thorough inquiry.
The petitioner urged the commission to ensure criminal/disciplinary action against the concerned police officials of the Nayapalli police station and Rs 20 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased.
