The disgraceful act of a police constable making a girl pregnant and ditching her has come to the fore in Sundargarh district.

An FIR in this connection was filed at Talsara police station. The accused constable, who has been now transferred to another district, was not responding to the girl and rather was allegedly threatening to kill her by pouring acid on her. The police constable was arrested from Angul on Friday late night. He will be forwarded to court on Saturday evening.

Sources said 22-year-old Rina (name changed), a native of Kumatoli village under Kiralaga Gram Panchayat of Subdega block of the district, had been residing with her distant relative since her father had gone missing about five years ago. Rina’s mother has also lost mental balance and also moves here and there following that incident.

About two years ago, Rina had come in contact with constable Pradeep of the vigilance office of Sundargarh. Pradeep had lured Rina with sweet words and their relationship had further got deepened. Pradeep, although married earlier, had gone on to marry Rina secretly at Patrapada Shiva temple by exchanging garland. Since then, he had been constantly keeping physical relationship with Rina. He had also promised Rina that he would divorce his wife and officially marry her but later ditched her. Rina in her FIR alleged that she had become pregnant at least on two occasions in last two years, but was forced to go for abortion.

Rina in her FIR mentioned that since June last, Pradeep started avoiding her and did not respond to her calls. As she was carrying another pregnancy of about six months and she had told him to marry her officially and keep her with him, Pradeep had threatened Rina of finishing her by pouring acid on her if she did not stop pestering her. Pradeep had been transferred to Angul district since August last.

Acting on the complaint of the victim, Sundargarh SP Sanjib Arrora directed the police team to investigate the matter, following which Pradeep was arrested from Angul on Friday late night under IPC Sections 417, 376 and 506. He will be forwarded to court on Saturday evening, said police.

“We arrested Pradeep from Angul on Friday late night. He will be forwarded to court soon,” said SDPO S Mishra.
