Contractor jumps to death from Idco Towers in Capital

A middle-aged man, who had constructed Navodaya Vidyalaya buildings on contract basis, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the multi-storied Idco Tower here on Tuesday afternoon after failing to get his bills cleared.

The deceased was identified as Gajendra Das, a contractor from the Kujang area of Jagatsinghpur district.

Das’ driver Umesh Ghadei claimed that his boss committed suicide under immense pressure as he was yet to get his bills cleared from the Government. “I know my boss better. He had constructed buildings for two Navodaya Vidyalayas on contract basis six years ago. He had come to the Idco Tower many times to get his bills cleared.  This time, he came to meet the Idco CMD for this purpose. Unable to meet the CMD, he might have committed suicide by jumping off the high-tower building,” said Ghadei.

As Tuesday was a holiday, there were no eyewitnesses to the shocking incident. Only 10-15 private security guards were on their duty at the entrance and exit gates of the tower.

“We heard a sound near the parking lot behind the Idco Tower. We rushed to the spot and found a man lying on the ground,” said a security guard.

He said they immediately informed about the mishap to the Idco maintenance head and the police who rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, police sent the body for postmortem and started investigation from various angles.

Sources said the police are collecting CCTV footages of the tower to ascertain the deceased person’s motive for visiting the building and to which particular office he had been.

last month, a woman had also died after falling off a four-storied apartment in the Saheed Nagar area.
